This course is designed as an introduction to the history, archaeology, literature, and material culture of ancient Pompeii, from its origins in the seventh century BCE to its eventual destruction by Vesuvius in 79 AD/CE. By the end of this course, students will have a basic understanding of the history of the site, its major buildings and archaeological finds, what we know about the people who lived there, and the role it plays in our understanding of the Roman past and how these narratives of the past continue to manifest and shape our present.
